SX~70 POLAROID MANIPULATION ART

The coloured emulsion of the SX-70 film is such that it takes hours for it to harden. During this time I can manipulate the layers of the soft emulsion by adding different degrees of pressure using a variety of stylus type instruments. I find the best time for me to work on the emulsion is anywhere between 1 hour and 3 hours after exposure. The end results give an impressionistic brushed look of an oil painting. Creativity as well as skill and gentle hands are required to achieve the dramatic change from the appearance of a photograph. Each image is unique as interpreted by myself and no two photographs will ever be the same.

Unfortunately, the Polaroid film itself is not archival, and will fade in due time. So once the images are finished and hardened, they are scanned into the computer and here they can be cropped if needed, enlarged and then printed on archival medium.

I have an old SX-70 Alpha1 Polaroid Land Camera that I use for all my work. Click here to see images from it.
